HELPFUL TIPS

BED & BREAKFAST

Your time of arrival is important so the owners can be sure they are there to welcome you. If your travel plans change, it is advisable to let the B&B owners know. Should you have to cancel your reservations, as a courtesy, as you would want yourself, please call ahead so they are not waiting for you.

The "table d'hôtes" is a traditional family meal and it is advisable to let your host know whether you wish to use this service. If your hosts do not provide table d'hôtes, they will recommend the best local restaurants where you can discover regional or traditional French cooking.

Please do not expect your country host to offer you the same service as a hotel. Remember that you are staying in private homes with hosts who are not professionals in the business of tourism. Their aim is to welcome you as friends and help you to enjoy the pleasures of the region.

MONEY MATTERS

For the best exchange rate, change currency at any bank in France. Rates can vary, so if time prevails, shop around. Your own bank account can be accessed at an automatic teller machine (ATM) with a bank card. Euros can also be obtained using a credit card. Most Bed & Breakfast/Gîtes require cash payment.

BRINGING WINE HOME

Most, if not all Wineries in the Famous French Wine Regions take creditcards. Please check local custom requirements for the importation of wines. Buying your favourite wines in France, or wines that are not available at home, can be imported and the cost, even with the horrendous duties, can be justified compared to prices you would have to pay at home. We have found that "Hachette Guide to Wine" is the best book for finding hidden value in your wine selections.

DRIVING IN FRANCE

Auto rental can be expensive in France and we recommend a plan from Renault called "EuroDrive". This plan allows you to lease a brand new auto, at very reasonable rates. The price includes all taxes, insurance and unlimited mileage. You must buy the fuel. These cars can be picked up and dropped off at all larger airports in France. You also have the opportunity to travel to other countries.
