The Maison St.Marty is a hameau peacefully situated up on a south facing rise with a few hectares of meadows, gardens and trees in the open countryside, near Ogeu-les-Bains, 25 km south-west of Pau.
The hameau is bordering on the natural reserve "Parc National des Pyrennées" and the Basque country. Spain is 50 km away and the Atlantic coast 100 km. There are beautiful scenic routes.
Nearby, the ancient Ibero-Roman small town of Oloron-Ste-Marie, is worth a visit. Reconstructed in the XIth century, it became a fortified town and a shelter for pilgrims during the "Reconquista" (see archives at the bibliothèque nationale). Oloron is also famed for producing the French bérets.
The Parc National des Pyrennées extends 100 km at an altitude above 1100 metres along the French and Spanish frontier. It boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in Europe. It is an unspoiled paradise for walkers, fishermen, cross-country skiers and naturalists. It is home to a variety of wild flora and fauna. One of the most enjoyable ways to see it is on foot: within the park are 350 km of well-marked footpaths. The park is inhabited except for shepherds leading their herds up to uplands pastures for the summer. This is "transhumance".
The owners of the hameau, Suzanne and Paul Selinger are much involved in the cultural activities of their community and are knowledgeable of their region. They are most amiable and will be happy to help their guests in planning excursions in the Pyrenees and recommend places of interest and scenic routes.
Paul has many years of experience of guiding visitors in the Pyrenees and he offers guided excursions at reasonable rates.
Suzanne is teaching french at the university of Pau. She is also offering french classes to her guests at Maison St.Marty.
